Tuesday 30 September 2008 Post Cornwall Syndrome
Well, it has taken me a while to get back to the blog, and following on from the last visual, here is a short video taken from the train (going towards Plymouth) on the viaduct, and looking down to St Germans. It is quite a beautiful setting up-river from Plymouth and the sea, and I miss it so much. Since being back (and losing two friends) I have been miserable, depressed and sleeping even worse than before. I am awaiting the result of blood tests, not wanting to go out, and just oozing through life like a worm. However my birds continue to flock here, and there have been some nice days, but as we approach ever closer to Winter, and extra layers I can only look forward to tomorrow - not like me, eh? ![]() back from Cornwall
Magical stay in Cornwall, and the pic shows the viaduct at St Germans - just before the station when arriving from Saltash. Enjoyable trip, with comfortable accommodation, good weather, and of course lots of trains, plus Cornwall and Devon - an ideal mix. There will be many videos, but at present I am adjusting back to life in Hertfordshire! Here's a quick summary of the week: Visited a dozen places, three branch lines and two preserved steam railways. Back soon! new photo added ironing video now over 500 views ![]() packing nightmare
As I prepare for my trip to Cornwall (only for one week) I am almost wishing I wasn't going! Because I haven't been away for a while, I have got out of the habit of packing. I am stressing about not taking everything I might need - as I am travelling by train, I have to pack it all into one bag. Because the weather is so uncertain, I am not sure what I should take to wear. I am afraid of sweltering in late summer sun, or should I risk an autumnal shiver? My clothes to take are laid out out on my bed, so I must do it before retiring. Will I get everything into my "enormous" bag? It is a self catering holiday in a converted railway carriage, so I will get some provisions from the village store as soon as I arrive. I have the details of a local firm that specialises in providing for holiday lets, but I am so disorganised, I have done nothing about it. I was originally going with Sue, but she dropped out, so without her car and cooking skills, this holiday will be more challenging. Really, I am looking forward to time away, and the chance to see or re-visit some local branch lines. I just hope the weather will be dry, and also I will be seeing two friends - one in Devon, one in Cornwall, so that is good. I get anxious about any travel, and after the news today of the fire in the Eurotunnel (that is 31 miles long!) I am feeling nervous even about train travel. Ridiculous. I hope I can regularise my sleeping pattern, and even more, wish to confirm my calorie reduced intake. It can be so tempting when away, to indulge. I must be strong. People have said to me they would never go on holiday on their own, but these are people who won't even go shopping alone. I have lived on my own most of my life, so it is second nature to me. I don't "need" another person to have a good time. Yes, it is very nice to share time with a friend, and in an ideal world... Back after one week. Miss me? ![]() catching up
Doing videos is great fun, but I don't have the same opportunity to catch up with all the miscellaneous news of my life. Right now I suffer the inconvenience of an eye infection. It keeps watering, and irritates, so I am treating it with Brolene ointment. While my eye is watering so much I can't do anything. It will be fine in a few days I am sure. Another medical matter is bothering me - the press reports of Ezetimibe as being a cause of cancer. I take this to help reduce my cholesterol, so I need to ask my GP, whether I should continue? There are so many "scares" in the media, it can be quite confusing. Early this morning (around 0130) I saw the badger again, grazing the grass in front of my lounge window. Maybe it is a regular visit, but with his hours we are unlikely to meet very often. I did open the front door to have a closer look (last time I took some photographs) but as he got closer I imagined he could be aggressive... so I retreated. I have a new visitor to the bird feeder, a siskin or greenfinch. I am still trying to confirm which. The starlings have returned in force, and are regular early morning visitors. I now put out the food a bit later, otherwise it has all gone by 9am. I get many replies and comments to my blogs and videos - many are friendly and personal, some abusive, and others amusing. One addressed me as "Pops" another as Dude, but most are appreciative, so that's OK. I have been having a mini sort out, and recycled many items. I realise with the new hoover, I need to keep the floor area as clear as possible otherwise it will never get cleaned. I have extended my desk area (where I am typing this) so that I can write to the right of the mouse, instead of leaning over awkwardly to the left hand side of the desk. This should reduce the regular pains in my right forearm and at the back of my neck? In my never ending quest to lose some weight, I am now managing to eat fruit as a desert, instead of a high calorie temptation. I know it is filling and satisfying, but just find it hard. As for the vegetables, well... The weather this week is suddenly autumnal, with rain and cold winds, so I hope it will improve for my forthcoming trip to Cornwall - more news of this later. Amazingly, I notice that my ironing video on "YouTube" has now been viewed over 400 times. Who would have thought such a mundane activity could attract so much interest? Keep watching. M25 motorway
Within walking distance of my home, the mighty M25 roars constantly, and here is a look at the motorway from the Hertfordshire Way footpath as it passes over the bridge - built to accommodate a single roadway as some remote housing exists on the "other" side, separated at the time of construction. I wonder how they coped during that time. Did they have to move out temporarily? Feeding the wildlife in Hemel Hempstead An enjoyable hour or two with a friend, feeding the ducks and geese at the Water Meadow in Hemel Hempstead town centre. Amid the noise of the busy Saturday morning traffic, we lost ourselves in the tranquility of this small nature paradise - a strip of water running parallel to the High Street where birds of all types live, breed and eat in plenty. A famous local attraction, supported by residents and visitors alike. |
